Mythology has it that when Zeus freed two eagles, one in the direction of the Orient and the other towards the West, the eagles met in Delphi, a site which then came to be considered the centre of the universe.
Our tour starts from Athens heading towards the Viotia region in which we find the historical city of Thebes, the famous city-state of Ancient Greece. We will stop briefly in Thebes to visit and admire the most important archeological site of the area which includes the Ancient Theatre of Phthiotidai dedicated to the God Dionysus, the Lion of Chaeronea, a marble statue built in honour of the Theban soldiers, the Temple of Apollo Patroos (meaning from the fathers) and the Monastery of Saint Luke, an important Bizantine monument from the 11th century. After this brief and fascinating stop, we will continue our tour towards the north to reach the magical site of Delphi.
Visitors can tour the site of Delphi and admire the incredible beauty of this enchanting and unique place. There are many wonderful things to see in Delphi such as the Treasure of the Athenians, a small temple dedicated to the God Apollo built between the 6th and 5th centuries BC and the Temple of Apollo, where rituals took place, the most important of which being the prophecy. The prophecy known as the Oracle of Delphi took place in the lower chambers of the temple, where only the priests who interpreted the oracles of the High Priestess Pythia could enter. Before giving the Oracle, the High Priestess Pythia and the priests took purifying baths in the sacred Castalian spring on Mount Parnassus and pilgrims cleansed themselves in the spring before consulting the Oracle. Other important places of interest at this site are: the Ancient Theatre of Delphi, a World Heritage listed site, the Delphi Archeological Museum where visitors can see statues and sculptures such as the famous Charioteer of Delphi, a masterpiece in bronze and unique in its imposing beauty as well as the statue of Antinoo and the Temple of Athena (380 B.C.)
As we leave this spectacular place behind us, we head towards the coast to our final destination, Galaxidi, a seaside town on the western side of the gulf of Itea where the visitor can admire the traditional architecture of the town, relax and enjoy a delicious dinner surrounded by breath-taking scenery!
